The following week of school was canceled. FBI agents, specialists in weather phenomenon, avian experts, and what Kyle’s dad called “Max Headroom’s” flooded the small town with researchers, weather experts, news cameras, orange cones and yellow tape.

Several students and even a few parents had choppy cell phone videos of people bouncing around as they ran for cover. One senior cheerleader in particular had a video that showed the best image of the tentacle. It was blurry with a dust cloud that distorted the clarity. Despite that, it was clear something hit the field near the bleachers and sideline. The girl was touring America on news channels crying and sharing her story. Kyle’s dad said she was also collecting some huge checks. Kyle saw her on her first interview.

She looked at the camera with tears in her eyes. “I don’t know what it was. I just know I almost died.”

In the privacy of his bedroom, Kyle couldn’t help but hold an imaginary press conference where he told the world exactly what happened.

“So there is this monster from another world. It has come here to destroy our world. I know because a version of myself came to visit me. But don’t worry, there is also a dragon that lives here. It came and protected us.” He imagined everyone applauding and how famous he could be. He was no longer just an average bench-warmer football player, he was the headline for every news channel. No longer just somebody, he was the most important somebody on the planet as everyone listened to him tell the story.

But he did not tell anyone. No one would’ve believed him. No one knew what the thing was or how it happened, only that it was bizarre and otherworldly.

Kyle’s parents were hesitant to let him or Libby outside for the first few days. Libby was fine with the new regiment of television and popsicles. Kyle couldn’t stay still. His mind kept playing and replaying the dragon’s words. “Soon. You must go soon. Or this world too will be gone. He knows. He seeks all of you from all worlds. So few of you left now. So few. He knows you are here and will come again. Find Merlin.”

He pestered his mom to go outside. She put up a good resistance, but finally relented. Permission came with a lot of warnings. Stay in the yard. Stay near the house. If anything changes in the weather, come inside immediately.

Kyle hovered around the yard for an hour. He watched his mom periodically look out the window to check on him. First it was every few minutes, and then every five or ten. Then, finally, her check-ins ceased.

He went directly for Mr. Olsen’s home.

Kyle cautiously opened the gate to the dilapidated fence and looked around. He made his way slowly to Olsen’s front door. About half way there, something ran out from behind the house. Kyle jumped in surprise. He scanned the area in a moment of panic but didn’t see anything.

There were a bunch of tall stones oddly placed in the yard.
